The latest Hays Quarterly Report, covering October to December 2017 has shown professional and business services jobseekers are in high demand across the country, but such talent being in short supply as growth in the sector underpins a talent mismatch. 

“In compiling our latest Hays Quarterly Report, we noticed that many of the new roles added are in the professional and business services sector,” says Nick Deligiannis, managing director of Hays in Australia & New Zealand. “It’s a broad sector that requires highly-skilled experts with a proven ability to add value to a firm’s clients.”

According to Nick, there are several factors behind the growing demand in professional and business services. “Rapid technological change, a need for strategic, technical and financial advice, a move to get closer to customers through the use of data and a desire from customers for full end-to-end services are all behind this trend,” he said. “Cost-saving is another factor, with businesses looking for advice or services from those who are experts in the exact area where assistance is required. This is leading to the emergence of more specialised professional and business services companies who in turn require highly-skilled staff to deliver the necessary services and retain customers.”


According to the Hays Quarterly Report for October to December, the following professional and business services experts are needed:

•Virtual CFOs: They provide a new revenue stream for firms while simultaneously providing greater value to an accounting firm’s clients;

•Senior Tax/Business Services Accountants: Those who can work autonomously and supervise junior staff without being in a hurry to move into management or partnership are in short supply;


•Digital IT experts: Digitalisation is fuelling demand for highly skilled professionals;

•Big data and security experts: There are not enough people to meet demand;

•Digital Content Producers: Those who can produce, optimise and track content are needed;

•Social media experts: Continue to be sought to help generate website traffic;

•Interior Designers: Architectural practices want people who can design as well as document;

•Project Architects: Technically-skilled candidates with strong construction knowledge are needed;

•Civil Designers: Sought for land development, highway and bridge projects;

•Licensed Surveyors: Many subcontract as sole traders and supply fails to meet demand;

•Civil Engineers: Needed for ongoing major project workloads in many consultancies;

•Retail and Commercial Leasing Specialists and Property Managers: In demand due to property development;

•Financial Advisers: Technically strong and CFP qualified advisers are in short supply, as are career Paraplanners;

•Insurance Brokers: People who perform the basics right, listen and communicate are needed;

•Partners: Mid-tier and boutique legal firms want partners with a transferable practice;

•Corporate Commercial Lawyers: There’s a shortage at the three to five years’ PAE level;

•Executive Assistants: Experienced candidates who can support multiple partners or an entire executive team are needed.
