Sir David Metcalf, director of Labour Market Enforcement, attended Brabner’s Manchester office for a lively debate on the importance of tackling labour market abuse. The events was attended by clients from across the recruitment sector.
David was named the first director of Labour Market Enforcement in January this year and is overseeing a government crackdown on exploitation in the workplace. This includes addressing illegal working practices, ensuring large employers’ supply chains do not breach labour market laws and reviewing the effectiveness of current enforcement efforts.
The event, which was co-hosted by TEAM gave Sir David the opportunity to meet with individuals from across the recruitment sector to discuss these issues.
“As part of my role, I am meeting with industry bodies and trade organisations across all sectors of the economy to better identify how we can address bad practice in the workplace,” said Sir David. “Being able to sit down and discuss these issues with those working across the recruitment sector has been invaluable and will help to inform a strategy that will truly tackle labour market abuse.”
Representatives from a broad range of recruitment agencies and recruitment trade bodies attended the event, including TEAM, APSCo, the Recruitment & Employment Confederation (REC), the Gangmasters and Labour Abuse Authority (GLAA), PRISM and the Freelancer & Contractor Services Association (FCSA).
Paul Chamberlain, partner and head of the recruitment sector at Brabners, added: “It’s vital for the recruitment sector to voice its opinion when it comes to an issue as important as exploitation in the workplace. By working so closely with TEAM, we brought together representatives of all corners of the sector. The discussion will help to inform Sir David’s consultation and we look forward to hearing the outcome when his strategy is published later this year.”
